Rolex Sporting Prince, Ref 2451 in White Gold, Circa 1940

This fine and rare Rolex Sporting Prince travel watch with a chronometer dial in 18k carat grey gold. Beautiful grooved case rectangular travel watch that opens three fold, silver dial with index batons and Arabic numbers at 3, 6, 9 and 12 0'clock.The Sporting Prince was a very rare version of the popular Rolex Prince watch that was introduced by Rolex in 1928. It was built to pop up out of a clam-shell case which protected the watch during athletic events, particularly golf.. Rolex started using 18 jewels in their Prince watches in 1932. The Prince wristwatch was advertised as "the watch for a gentleman of distinction". In 1930 the 18k Prince wristwatch cost 25 pounds sterling in London. The Sporting Prince, with its outer case of 18k grey gold, would have retailed for considerably more.
