Rolex Perpetual Padellone, Ref 8171 in Stainless Steel, Circa 1951

The Rolex Perpetual Padellone Ref 8171 is one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex models, revered for its exquisite design and technical sophistication. Its nickname, “Padellone” (large frying pan), reflects its distinctive 38mm diameter, which was remarkably large for its era, setting it apart as a timeless classic.

This reference, along with its waterproof Oyster sibling Ref 6062, is one of only two vintage Rolex models to feature moon phases. Produced for a short period in the early 1950s, the Ref 8171 was available in yellow gold, pink gold, and stainless steel, making this stainless steel version exceptionally rare.

The watch showcases a stunning silvered dial, complemented by square and dagger indexes, an Arabic numeral at 12, and Dauphine hands. The layout integrates a triple calendar complication (day, date, and month) with a moon-phase aperture and subsidiary seconds dial. The outer date ring, paired with a blue central date hand, enhances its functional elegance.
